We like to try things out
Through our Collab Labs and conversations with educators and community partners we see lots of interesting places where the ideas and enthusiasm of educators could lead to some remarkable opportunities for students. We’re also big believers in trying things out at a small scale to better understand the challenges and opportunities at hand. Over the past couple of years that has included exploring perceptions of what makes for a safe route to school with a group of students at North Division, concerns around school lunch at Prince of Peace, equipment tear down events with MIAD and SHARP Literacy, and challenging a team of students participating in The Commons program to find an up-cycling model for Milwaukee that could make excess material from area businesses available for school maker spaces.
This year we’re working with teachers from area schools and UWM’s English department to develop a process for students to explore the breadth of careers in healthcare and the paths local folks have taken to get there with our Career Interviews project.
If you have something you’d like to try out, let us know. Here are a few of the things we’re interested in:
- Using storytelling as a point of engagement.
- Using maps as a tool to engage kids in the neighborhood surrounding their school.
- Using school gardens/aquaponics systems for cross-disciplinary exploration.
- Up-cycling.
- Helping students build connections that allow them to feel safer in their community.
- Leveraging agile methods to aid collaboration among educators.
Use the form below if any of these ideas (or one of your own) inspires you. Let’s see what we can create!
