Collab Lab 17: Healthy Food Passport — Connecting Students to Food & Culture

Thursday February 8, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

At our December Collab Lab, we generated ideas for projects that would allow students to explore healthcare issues that have meaning for them.  One of those ideas, the Healthy Food Passport, envisioned an exploration of culture and food with an aim to help students understand the food production process and how to create healthy dishes.

With the Healthy Food Passport, we see an opportunity to connect students to a lot of interesting work going on in Milwaukee– urban agriculture, issues around access to healthy food choices, as well as the food and beverage center of excellence FaB Wisconsin has proposed for the near west side.  It’s the sort of idea that hits all of our criteria for the kinds projects we want to help spur– those that:

  • engage students in real-world problems that have meaning for them;
  • help connect students to adults and organizations in the broader community;
  • provides an easy on-ramp for teachers who’d like to participate;
  • can scale to something beyond a single school or district.

In this session we’ll drill into the idea to identify specific issues with meaning for students and work together to scope out small scale experiments that can help educators explore what a project with their students might look like and how it could grow for there.

Come share ideas with your colleagues at public, private, and charter schools from across greater Milwaukee, as well as some folks outside of K12 who offer an interesting perspective on the topic.

The Collab Lab will be held in the innovation space at Ward 4, 333 North Plankinton Avenue, Milwaukee, WI. Space provided courtesy of The Commons.
